Gary Nielan, M.D.

I attended SUNY at Buffalo and graduated with my Mechanical Engineering degree in 1986. I subsequently received my M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1988 at MIT while doing research related to asthma. During my time in Boston I particularly enjoyed attending conferences and spending time at Boston Children’s Hospital. From 1988-1991, I worked at Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine working on cardiopulmonary research with racehorses. During this time I volunteered as a “Big Brother” for a teenage boy. I graduated from SUNY at Buffalo with my MD degree in 1995, and, later that year, moved to Western Massachusetts in 1995 to complete my Pediatrics residency at Baystate Medical Center in 1998.

I have worked at Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine since 1998 and have been very fortunate to work with dedicated, caring, hardworking coworkers and colleagues. Since then I have enjoyed getting to know many families; sharing the healthy times and helping them through life’s difficult moments. I have many varied interests in General Pediatrics from newborns through the teenage years. I hold a particular place in my heart for patients with chronic illnesses, helping families through difficult emotional times and just being there for worried parents and their children. I also hold strong areas of interest in infectious disease, developmental and behavioral concerns, asthma, sports medicine, and helping patients develop health lifestyles and decision making to prevent illness or injury. I firmly believe that humor can be one of life’s best medicines.

I live in Belchertown with my wife, Dr. Patricia Krebs, a local pathologist. We are officially “empty-nested” but still very close to our son’s, Chris and Alex. In my spare time I enjoy ice hockey, golf, fishing (especially at the Quabbin Reservoir), skiing, bird watching, traveling and gardening. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing time with my family and watching our boys grow up.

I have been extremely fortunate to work at Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine and look forward to spending my career and family life in Western Massachusetts.
